Notes from reporter Taryn Brodwater's phone interview with Kootenai County Chief Deputy prosecutor Rick Baughman Wednesday (11/29/2006) evening. Baughman first asked to make a statement: "I hope that you obtain the income from the sales of your paper from the sensationalizing of people being human beings or friends. "I recognize that your paper is a business. I understand that, but when you start destroying peoples lives and credibilities and when you start causing humility amongst their children in their high school you have overstepped the bounds. "At some point you have to draw the line. How many times do my kids have to undergo the torments of their friends just so you can sell a newspaper." Asked about the sexual harassment allegations, Baughman replied: "There have been no complaints filed." Asked why he sent the e-mails, Baughman was silent.
The wee Eee
In place of the usual hard disk drive, which is filled with moving parts, the Eee uses flash memory, like what comes in an iPod Nano or a USB thumb drive. It also has no CD or DVD reader. All that cuts down on storage — the review model had only four gigabytes — but makes the machine lighter and sturdier.
The other is the Eee's efficient, secure software. Windows Vista's bulk would swamp the Eee's limited storage, so Asus chose the free, open-source Linux operating system.
The result is a nifty but sometimes tricky Internet machine usable for basic writing, spreadsheet and presentation work — and which can't get sick from Windows viruses or spyware. If you stick to those activities, you can be happy with the Eee.
But you will need to adapt.
