Ken Markling of Bear Valley Electric Service went to Rosemead for answers.Power outages Dec. 27 and Jan. 5 were linked to the Gold Hill Substation, but initial investigations by Southern California Edison came up empty, Markling said. Southern California Edison operates the Gold Hill Substation that feeds power to Big Bear Valley.Further investigations showed switches at the substation designed to cut power during spikes were incorrectly set, Markling said. The switches tripped prematurely and well below the threshold they are designed to trip at, Markling said.Bear Valley Electric Service said it would not pursue punitive action against Southern California Edison at this time. The Novato Police took a missing persons report at 11:30am Tuesday, they suspected he might have used his mother's credit card to buy a plane ticket.

The next thing they know, the 16 year old they're looking for is arrested in Nashville, Tennessee at around 7:30 p.m. our time. The TSA says he was arrested for a probation violation. The FBI says he plotted to hijack an airplane. Agents found the teen with rope, duct tape, and handcuffs. He never tried anything on the plane. They say he is suicidal. The TSA says nothing found with the teenager is prohibited, not even the handcuffs.

On its website the agency says this is a lesson to watch for suspicious behavior as much as for items. The U.S. Attorney's office in Nashville says it is reviewing the case to see if federal charges are appropriate.

Connected: Credit card receipts can leave a paper trail

On a recent business trip to Albany, my associate and I decided to go to a restaurant to relax after a hard day. After our meal, I paid with my credit card, and in the usual manner, the waiter returned two copies of the receipt -- one for me as a record and one for the restaurant -- which needed to be signed.

I signed the receipt and, despite my associate's request to leave the restaurant, stayed until I could find an appropriate person to whom I could hand the restaurant's copy of the charge slip. Unlike most restaurants, this local establishment was still printing the full credit card number on the receipt, so I refused to leave it on our table for the next person to view -- and perhaps steal my credit card number.

It's not a new concern to me. I've refused to leave behind my charge receipts for years -- perhaps before most people even realized it was a threat.
